What is on your minds?
we will go around the "room" once more for input from each staff member in attendance

News Flash........

Another HamFest has been pushed back a year....

The Cowtown ARC HamFest Chair contacted me about two weeks ago
and we had a discussion about the pros and cons of them holding their Fest This January
That club's BOD just recently announced the Cowtown 2021 (January 2021) HamFest is Canceled

Most of you know that the Orlando HamCation had already announced that fest was canceled

Re: Winlink Wednesday

John Hill - KF5VO

It's that time once again for Winlink Wednesday!

Halloween is approaching soon! Time to kick off the holiday season. So, we'll start with the question we did last year. We have lots of new people since then, and your answer may have changed over time. So, the question for this week's net is: What is YOUR favorite candy (either as a kid, or adult. Doesn't have to be Halloween specific)?

Other instructions:

Use the same template when checking in.  As a reminder, to use the template, when the New Message screen is opened, click on the menu items Select Template --> Standard Templates --> GENERAL Forms --> Winlink Check In.txt.

Make sure in the Send To box to put my call sign, KF5VO.

In the location box, put the name of your city/town, and which gateway you're connecting through (if known).

IF YOU ARE USING SOMETHING OTHER THAN WINLINKE TO CHECK IN:
In the body of the message, place the following information seperated by a tab. Include the info between the stars below. This is how the information is sent if you are using the Winlink form. It makes it much easier for me to tally the results. I have a script that tallies the check-ins, and it looks for the information below, between the strings "TAB Delimited:" and "Semicolon Delimited:"

***********************************************************************************

TAB Delimited:
title (or blank)<tab>date time <tab> call sign <tab> call sign <tab> location <tab> GPS Coordinates (or blank) <tab> Grid Square <tab> ham band <tab> session type <tab> Comments

Semicolon Delimited:
***********************************************************************************

Happy Winlinking!

Hurricane Delta / Laura Red Cross Update

Kevin McCoy

Communication Partner Update 10/10/20

Wishful thinking. When I wrote you last weekend I said it would be our last TX update on Hurricane Laura. But fate intervened. As Delta's storm track clarified, we of course stopped encouraging folks to return home. 51 days after starting our Disaster Response on Hurricane Laura Red Cross is still helping to support 8,300 Hurricane Laura evacuees sheltered in Hotels across Texas and Louisiana.

Hurricane Delta
Hurricane Delta track hit many of the Parishes impacted by HUR Laura

Last night an additional 1,000 evacuees from Hurricane Delta sought refuge in 6 Evacuation shelters in East Texas, Louisiana, and Mississippi. Based on the overnight flooding I expect these numbers will increase today.

Stocking up
Before the storm - Stocking up to set up shelters and preposition 60,000 ready to eat meals

As the night progressed it was sad to watch the good work the power companies did over the last months to restore power. Many of the same communities that were impacted before were once again plunged into darkness. By morning 800,000 Customers were without power across TX, LA, and MS.

Power outage this
      AM

We were able to preposition people and material before the storm. The Disaster Relief effort in Louisiana was made part of the Area command covering Louisiana and Texas.  A separate Disaster relief effort was organized for Alabama and Mississippi.

800 Trained Red Cross workers were supporting the effort on Laura and Delta in Louisiana and Texas. I don't have insight in the resources for the AL/MS effort at this time.

ERV On the Job
These volunteers are Emergency Response Vehicle drivers.  A key element in our logistics for delivery of equipment, meals, and shelter set up.

We were also able to set up Emergency shelters and push 60,000 Ready to eat meals along with shelter and relief supplies.

At the moment our principle concerns are flooding, power lines, generator safety, power outage safety. Our main mission to shelter, feed, and maintain communication with government officials and other voluntary groups active in disaster.

Flooding and Risk
      Areas

Most of our boots on the ground folks were moved into the shelters where our clients are staying so that they would be available as evacuees arrived.  We lock down travel for safety when tropical force winds appear, and the reengage when safe.

Thank you

Kevin @KF5FUZ
American Red Cross

Re: Traffic system RESPONDING for Hurricane Delta

Aaron Hulett | K8AMH

After today's extended session, the 7290 Traffic Net did not receive storm-related traffic. After careful consideration, the 7290 Traffic Net team determined that extended sessions are no longer needed.

Based on this and other current information, I have lowered the traffic system status to Monitoring. Should storm-related traffic arrive in the traffic system, it will be relayed based on its precedence (emergency, priority, or welfare) which the system continuously accounts for in its day-to-day operations. Unless we see traffic, such as from post-incident situational reports such as damage reports, the system will return to Normal Operation tomorrow afternoon.

My thanks to everyone for stepping up ahead of and during Hurricane Delta. I hope this will be the last hurricane for this year, but if another storm does strengthen and threaten our or neighboring areas, we'll be ready.

Traffic system RESPONDING for Hurricane Delta

Hurricane Delta, a strong Category 2 storm, is hours from making landfall. In response, the 7290 Traffic Net is running extended sessions tomorrow, Sunday, and Monday.

Given the latest information, I have upgraded the section's traffic system status to RESPONDING. While large volumes of storm-related traffic are not anticipated, traffic handlers are monitoring for and will relay any emergency, priority, or welfare traffic flowing through the traffic system.

The NTS Status Dashboard, now located on the Section website, is the primary resource in North Texas for monitoring the latest traffic system information. It also has the latest forecast map, radar and satellite imagery, audio briefings from the National Hurricane Center, and more as part of tracking Delta.

I have no issue using Winlink Wednesday as a practice session to support an upcoming exercise. If you get with me a couple weeks in advanced of the exercise and explain how you would like for me to help, I'd be more than willing. Just remember, our Winlink Wednesday net has an International participation. I'd like for anything we do with the net to be applicable to as many people as possible.

Who are partners NVOA  - all I hear about is the RC - what about
the Salvation Army (SATERN, REACT, Baptist Men, etc. - I never
hear about our others partners - why?

Good Day,

I hope this email finds everyone save and you and yours are well.

As you know, I have scheduled our Fall SET for November 14. As it turns out, the American Red Cross is also planning a Winlink Communications test as well on November 14th. I am working with our ARC representative to sync up concerning the SET.  The purpose of the test is to proficiency in delivering traffic via Winlink.

I have attached a document discussing the Winlink Proficiency Goals For Radio Operators Supporting the ARC. Please review the document and review with your teams.

In addition, there is a Winlink Practice that is held on Thursdays. I will forward details about each practice as soon as I receive it.

This is an opportunity for North Texas ARES provide support to our partners in the National Volunteer Organizations Active in Disaster.

Re: Winlink Wednesday

John Hill - KF5VO

It's that time once again for Winlink Wednesday!

The weather is turning, and autumn has arrived. For this week's net, let me know what it is you like the most about the autumn season!

Please note that there has been a new form release for Winlink Express. For those of you using Winlink Express, please make sure you're using version 1.0.137.0. With this latest update to the templates, they added a box for grid square. I am not the person that updates / maintains this form. I assume the grid square is taken from the setup in Winlink Express. If you remember from our GPS testing we did a few weeks ago, you can have it set the grid square to the GPS coordinates. That may be helpful if you use Winlink in the field.

So, if you are putting the grid square in the location, you no longer have to do that. If you do not put your grid square in the form (or it's not populated), I will assume you are sending from the grid square that you have listed in QRZ.

For those of you that are using a client other than Winlink Express, I will update the website (linked below) in a week or two with further instructions.

Happy Winlinking!

North Texas ARES Members,

As you know AFMARS and AMARS station have started a month long exercise on 03 October 2020.  As part of our exercise we will be conducting a 60 meter nets that will start at noon or 1200 pm LDT on the days listed below:

Oct Dates:  4, 7, 10, 13, 16, 19, 22, 25

These nets should be found on 5.330.50 if the frequency is clear with either an AFMARS or AMARS NCS.  If the frequency is not clear we will be move up on the 60 meter frequencies until we can find on.  At this time these NCS will be asking you for your amateur call sign, city and state.  Make sure your information is copied correctly, because Army MARS will be sending out QSO cards confirming your contact with a MARS station.

As the exercise continues we will be moving traffic into the SATERN, NTS, SHARES, ARS SET operations in an ICS-213 format request for information or assigned tasking. This should be a fun exercise which both the amateur community and MARS station moving traffic between both our systems.

If anyone as any questions about this please feel free to contact me by my attached cell phone number.

Hamcation 2021 Cancelled

Greg Evans, K5GTX NTX SEC

A Letter

From The Chairman

About HamCation 2021

As the world's second largest hamfest, we pride ourselves on delivering a high-quality event to our attendees and would not want to put on a show that is anything less than what the ham radio community deserves. After much deliberation, the difficult decision to postpone the 75th HamCation was made. It is with heavy hearts that we must make this decision. We had wished to see all of you next year in person, but the situation we face globally has made this challenging. Instead, HamCation will be moved to February 11-13, 2022. We are looking to host some unique Webinars, a QSO Party and possibly Prize Drawings for 2021. More information to come on our website soon.

For those who have already purchased tickets and spaces, we will be in contact with you shortly and will reach out to you directly. You will have the option to use your ticket for HamCation 2022, receive a refund or donate the funds to the Orlando Amateur Radio Club.

We thank all of you for your patience and understanding during these times and are excited to see you all again in 2022.

73,

Michael Cauley, W4MCA
General Chairman - Orlando HamCation
